Some millennia ago Ireland was covered in vast forests dominated by oaks and pines. A sudden change in climate triggered the rapid development of peatlands which in many places literally engulfed the forests. A subsequent rise in sea levels saw these petrified forests disappear under sand and mud. Sometimes however these drowned forest make a reappearance, usually after rough weather, like here at the Shannon Estuary in County Clare. Visible in the distance is the coal fired power station at Tarbert, a symbol for the current climate change event.
